President Ghani and China’s State Councilor discussed connectivity, counter-terrorism cooperation

Arg, Dec 15, 2018 —President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met with China’s foreign minister and State Councilor, Wang Yi today after he signed the tripartite anti-terrorism cooperation MoU with Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Mr. Wang Yi said China welcomes President Ghani’s “comprehensive and profound” roadmap to peace, and added that peace could only be achieved when it is led and owned by Afghans.

President Ghani acknowledged China’s efforts in furthering regional cooperation on peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan, and said that a peace agreement will need regional endorsement for it to be sustainable. He also extended gratitude to President Xi Jinping for aligning China’s policy with India and U.S. on peace, reconciliation and development in Afghanistan.

Further, President Ghani sought Chinese investment on solar power in Afghanistan. Mr. Wang Yi said that following President Ghani’s request, China is ready to train Afghan troops for forming a brigade in northeastern mountains of Afghanistan for border security and preventing cross-border infiltration of terrorists.
