Families of Fallen Canadian Soldiers in Afghanistan were honoured in Calgary Alberta, Canada

His Excellency Sham L. Bathija, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to Canada on October 1st had the opportunity to meet with family members of soldiers from Calgary who had been killed in action while serving with Afghan forces in Afghanistan. Some of these include: Pvt. Chadwick Horn, Cpl. Michael Seggie, Cpl. Michael Starker, Cpl. Nathan Hornburg,Cpt. Nichola Goddard, Sgt. Darcy Tedford, Pvt. Steven Marshall and Pvt. Kevin Dallaire.

Arrangements for this occasion was made possible after consulting with, and enlisting the help of, the Canadian Armed Forces, the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff and the Military Museums of Calgary. With the help of these organizations, an embassy friend and local Calgary artist, David Stuart Watson was able to organize this event and an intimate and meaningful meeting of Ambassador Bathija and the next of kin of the eight local soldiers lost in Afghanistan.

There was a strong show of military support at the gathering, something no doubt appreciated by the families of the eight fallen soldiers. Representatives from Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, the Royal Canadian Regiment, 1 Combat Engineer Regiment, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the local Afghan community and the Calgary Military Families Resource Centre where all in attendance.

Lieutenant Colonel Mark Connally of 3rd Canadian Division Support Group was the senior military official present. Also in attendance were… Lieutenant Colonel Sean Trenholm, Captain Tim Robinson and Chief Warrant Officer Halcro of CFB Wainwright, Major Trevor Friesen of 1 Combat Engineer Regiment as well as Captain Dave Peabody, Sergeant Brad Lowes and Corporal Andrew Mullet of the PPCLI. All of whom are veterans of military service in Afghanistan.

The ceremony culminated with the presentation of letters of appreciation presented to the families of the fallen soldiers by HE The Ambassador. Also, personalized commemorative memorial prints to the family members of the fallen soldiers were presented by Mr. Watson. At the conclusion of the formal presentation ceremony the ambassador took the opportunity to speak with individual family members as well as tour the PPCLI Museum which was much appreciated and welcomed.

The event itself received press coverege by Global Television News, the Calgary Sun Newspaper, the Canadian Forces and several Afghan news agencies.
