H.E. Shinkai Karokhail Meets with Hon. Mark Eyking, Chairperson of Canada’s Standing Committee on International Trade

Ottawa, February 16, 2017 – Her Excellency Shinkai Karokhail, Afghanistan’s Ambassador in Ottawa, met with Honorable Mark Eyking, the Chairperson of Canada’s Standing Committee on International Trade. The discussions focused on expanding bilateral ties, encouraging Canadian businesses for investment in Afghanistan, strengthening of inter-parliamentary relations, and revival of Afghanistan-Canada Parliamentary Friendship Committee.
H.E. Karokhail thanked the Canadian government for its continued support and renewal of its recent military and civilian aid commitments in Warsaw and Brussels conference on Afghanistan. Relationships between Afghanistan and Canada are based on mutual interests and shared priorities.
The Ambassador of Afghanistan reiterated on the importance of opening of a new chapter of collaboration between Afghanistan and Canada built on new opportunities and joint cooperation; including promotion of trade and investment between the two countries. Afghanistan can offer great investment opportunities, particularly in the mining sector, to the Canadian companies. The Embassy is ready to play a bridging role between Canadian companies and their Afghan counterparts to navigate opportunities in Afghanistan.
Both sides agreed that the topic of trade and investment in Afghanistan will be put for considerations and discussions in the upcoming meeting of the International Trade Committee with the ambassadors of Asia Pacific countries in the autumn of 2017 in Ottawa.
H.E. Karokhail also stressed on the importance of reviving Afghanistan-Canada Parliamentary Friendship Committee and its role in strengthening bilateral ties and bolstering inter-parliamentary relations between the two countries. Hon. Eyking made a promise of utmost cooperation in this respect.
At the end, H.E. Karokhail presented a sample of Afghan Saffron and a vessel engraved with Lapis Lazuli to Hon. Eyking, as a token of friendship and solidarity between the two countries.
